Anchorage
Neighborhoods
Most residential development in the
Anchorage Bowl over the last 20 years has been to the south and east of
downtown. Two large military bases, Elmendorf AFB and Fort
Richardson US Army base, border the Municipality to the north and west,
so development in that direction is limited.
You'll hear people refer to "The Hillside"
which includes about any area in the foothills from 500 feet or so up
to the treeline of the Chugach Mountains. Most of the land
bordering Cook Inlet sits atop a bluff overlooking the water so they're
referred to as "The Bluff." The area in between is pretty
flat and people often refer to two large areas "East
Anchorage" and "South Anchorage." There are some small
pockets near town that
don't fit into the larger ones just described. That
includes Government Hill, west of Anchorage, Turnagain, which
is south of downtown and Spenard and Jewel Lake to the south of Stevens
International Airport. Eagle River is between Anchorage and the Valley
but more closely resembles Anchorage in it's neighborhoods.
